 Message of the College Dean

Rapid population growth and environmental challenges are driving the need to transition from traditional to modern food production methods. In Ethiopia, agriculture is a cornerstone of livelihoods, yet practices in crop production, livestock management, and natural resource use remain largely conventional. To address these issues and enhance food security, the government is focusing on establishing and expanding agricultural training and research centers.

Debre Markos University has been dedicated to this mission for over a decade, aiming to produce skilled graduates through its Agriculture and Natural Resources College. This college is ideally situated to leverage the region’s diverse agro-ecologies and agricultural potential, addressing key challenges in production, productivity, and marketing through research and community service.

The college is staffed with experienced professionals and offers a variety of programs across eight departments, including undergraduate degrees in Animal Science, Plant Science, Horticulture, Natural Resource Management, Agricultural Economics, and Rural Development and Agricultural Extension, Agro forestry and veterinary laboratory technology. It also provides fifteen master’s programs, such as Plant breeding, Agronomy Animal Production, Animal Nutrition and feed processing, Integrated watershed management, Agricultural Economics, Environmental science, Soil Science, Horticulture, Plant protection, Agricultural Entomology, Rural Development. Forest management and climate change, Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology. The college has four PhD programs namely Animal production, Animal Nutrition, Agronomy, and Plant Breeding. These programs are tailored to develop skilled professionals equipped to tackle significant agricultural challenges in the community. Recognized as a center of excellence, the college emphasizes Crop Production and Agro-processing and engages in research aimed at solving societal problems.
