Message of the College Dean
Welcome to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Debre Markos University, located in the agriculturally rich and ecologically diverse landscapes of East Gojjam, Northwestern Ethiopia. Since its establishment in 2000 E.C. (2007/2008 G.C.), the College has grown into a dynamic academic and research institution. As Dean of the College, I am delighted to welcome prospective students, researchers, partners, alumni, and all visitors to our academic community. Agriculture remains the backbone of Ethiopia’s economy, playing a central role in ensuring food security, employment, and economic transformation. However, the sector faces increasing challenges from climate change, land degradation, population pressure, and evolving market demands. These realities call for innovative, science-based, and practical solutions areas where our college is deeply committed to making a meaningful contribution.
The College currently offers a wide range of academic programs, including eight undergraduate, fifteen master’s, and four PhD programs (see page 9). These programs are designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills, enabling them to address real-world agricultural challenges and contribute to national development. Our teaching and research are supported by multiple facilities, including laboratories, research and demonstration farms, greenhouses, and a developing plant genetic resource center. The College is also recognized as a Center of Excellence in Crop Production and Agro-processing, reflecting its strong focus on innovation, technology transfer, and value chain development.
Looking ahead, our vision is to become one of East Africa’s leading colleges in applied agricultural education, research, and community service by 2040. We are continuously strengthening our academic programs, modernizing infrastructure, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, and fostering a culture of excellence and inclusiveness.
